Built on Adirondack Ground
This is a plain camp built on hard miles and respect for the woods. We dont offer stands and food plots; we offer an honest experience for those ready to spend their time in the big woods. Come to learn the ridges and hunt this land the right way.
The Approach
These woods don’t give things up easy. Most days start in the dark with coffee, a map, and a rough plan. I pay attention to tracks, feed, wind, and how the timber feels underfoot, and I adjust as we go. My job is to keep us moving with purpose, not rushing, and to help you see what I’m seeing as the day unfolds.
Black Spruce hunts are built around understanding the landscape, reading the sign, and making informed decisions in the field
Success may come with a harvest. It always comes with knowledge.
Who These Hunts Are For
Black Spruce hunts are built for hunters who value preparation, learning, and time spent in wild country. Whether you're pursuing your first Adirondack deer or returning to deepen your understanding of the region, each hunt is tailored to your goals and experience.
Working With Us
1. The Conversation
I’ll ask about your goals, experience, and how you move in the woods. Then I’ll build a plan that matches your pace, your abilities, and what you’re hoping for from the hunt.
2. Mapping the Hunt
I’ll study my field notes and maps, then provide gear checklist for your season. You’ll know what country we’re hunting, how we’ll move through it, and what you actually need to bring.
3. Days Afield
Boots are laced and coffee is downed in the dark. We’ll start with a clear plan and adjust to what the woods give us—sign, wind, pressure, and weather. My job is to keep us hunting smart, safe, and steady.
4. Looking Back
We’ll talk through the sightings and the lessons learned—whether we brought meat home or just more knowledge.
Early Season
Warm days and heavy foliage keep deer tight to cover. We focus on patterns, food, and quiet sits on the edges of their daily routes. It’s patient work in thick woods, built around what the sign says, not the calendar.
Peak Rut
Deer start to move hard, and the woods feel restless. We hunt ridges, funnels, and travel corridors where bucks check does and wind. Fresh sign and wind calls the shots; we adjust as the woods change day to day.
Late Season
Cold, snow, and bare timber lay everything open. Tracks, beds, and feed in the snow tell you where deer are—and where they aren’t. We use that sign to stay honest, cover ground, and make the most of short, hard days.
The Seasons
I think about these woods in seasons, not dates on a calendar. Each stretch of the year asks for a different pace, different country, and a different kind of patience. When we plan your hunt, we’ll talk about what the woods are doing then, and choose the time that fits how you like to hunt.
Built For Adirondack Hunters
MOUNTAIN FLOW
Hard ridges and spruce flats dictate our path. We move with the land as it shifts from damp autumn floors to the frosted peaks of the high country.
FOREST SKILL
Tracking and reading sign are the core of our work. Learn to interpret the forest and move with quiet intent, becoming a part of the Adirondack landscape.
SMALL GROUPS
Quiet days in deep timber are best shared with few. We focus on reading the woods together and examining every rub and track we cross on the trail.
Common Questions
Preparing for these woods brings up questions about gear and terrain. Here are the details to help you get ready for a serious stay in the big timber.
Black Spruce is built around woodsmanship, local knowledge, and time in the Adirondack woods. These hunts are designed to help hunters understand how animals move through the landscape, how to read sign, and make informed decisions in the field. Success is measured by more than a harvest – it’s about living with a deeper understanding of the woods.
Black Spruce welcomes both new and experienced hunters. Beginners receive guidance on preparation, equipment, safety, and field skills. Experienced hunters often come looking to sharpen their understanding of Adirondack terrain and hunting strategies.
We hunt Whitetail, Bear, and Turkey on public land and wilderness areas. We’ll pick the specific ground during our planning to match the season and what you are looking to find in the Adirondack backcountry.
No day is easy. Expect uneven ground, wet weather, and active miles. I’ll send a gear list before we meet. We’ll talk through the physical side of things ahead of time so you arrive at the trailhead ready for the mountain.
That is exactly why we are here. Many come to improve their scouting and decision making. While the goal is always a clean harvest, the priority is building your confidence and your eye for sign in the Adirondack big woods.
Local Knowledge. Steady Patience.
No shortcut replaces time in the woods. Every season offers something to learn for those willing to walk a little farther and pay a little closer attention.
